Taking the plunge

When I was about 6 years old I decided I was going to learn to swim. I was at a big indoor swimming pool, put on a mask and snorkel, walked to the deep end and jumped in. I sank to the bottom, then kicked off the bottom and got back to the surface where I got some more air. I went back down and up another time or two until eventually a lifeguard reached in and lifted me out of the pool. After being told off, I scampered back to the shallow end and my sister started teaching me how to swim.

Sparring at First Friday tonight in Union City was a little like that, I was definitely out of my depth a little. I'm pretty sure the guys there spar pretty often. I sparred with 3 people I'd never met before and one guy from my sister school in oakland. The first guy was a little much for me and kicked me in the head and gave me a black eye. The other two strangers were much more my speed, or maybe I had just found my legs a little by then, and it felt a lot more comfortable. I was taking some hits and getting some in, but I felt we were both getting a little something out of it, or at least laying the groundwork for the next time we meet.

I don't know the name of the school in Union City, they do Kenpo mixed with Jiu Jitsu I think, but the people there were really easy-going and respectful. Just about everyone walked up to me and introduced themselves, making me feel more at ease. All in all I'm really happy with my first experience at an open sparring night and I'm already looking forward to going there again. No pictures from tonight, it just didn't seem cool to ask someone to take any, but tomorrow there will be more sparring in North Beach with a bunch of people from my school and more. So I'll definitely have pictures or maybe even video to share.

you must be, like, really into your new job if you're blogging at 2:30 AM on a Saturday.
