Project Homeless

On foggy Wednesday morning LiveJournal staff met at San Francisco's City Hall. Once almost everyone had arrived, we walked over to Bill Graham Civic Auditorium to volunteer with Project Homeless. It has been a long time since I have volunteered for something like this and I was looking forward to seeing how it would work, in a city with a lot of homeless people.

The sign-in process was painless, but the orientation was a little silly; very little orientation and a lot of applauding.

As a group we were assigned to the Cafe, and once we got there we soon got assigned tasks. I was tasked with line management at the entrance to the Cafe with dwell and sunrise_bee. I mostly just helped people figure out which line to get in for sit-down or take-out lunch, and answered a bunch of other questions too. Most of the "clients" we were helping were fairly appreciative, which was good to see. It seemed like a lot of people were helped and I'm happy I had a chance to volunteer.
