Knife Workshop

Yesterday, saturday, I went to a knife workshop in oakland. It was led by Andrew Pelayo, an Eskrima instructor. The focus of the class was dealing with someone trying to stab and slash at your gut. The idea was to get out of the way of an attack, then come in on the attacker and control their knife hand and the same arm or shoulder. Turning the tables around, the last thing we worked on was countering someone trying to disarm you of a knife. To do this we learned a joint lock to remove someone's hand from your shoulder and take them to the ground where you could regain control of your knife hand.

It was a good and simple instruction on how to handle someone with a knife. Focusing on a particular type of attack and practicing the moves over and over again really helped the lesson sink in. The most important lesson being, don't get cut.
