Webhosting with a sense of humor

DreamHost provides me with webhosting, and at times I've been slightly annoyed by their informal tone of communication. Mostly in their monthly newsletter updates. But I love the response I got just now, regarding a billing mistake and email I got this morning.

Hi Henry!

Ack. Through a COMPLETE bumbling on our part, we've accidentally attempted to charge you for the ENTIRE year of 2008 (and probably 2009!) ALREADY
(it was all due to a fat finger)!

We're really really realllly embarassed about this, but you have nothing to worry about. Please ignore any confusing billing messages you may have received recently; we've already removed all those bum future charges on your account (#XXXXXX) and fixed everything up.

Thank you very very much for your patience with this.. we PROMISE this won't happen again. There's no need to reply to this message unless of course you have any other questions at all!

Their apology/status includes a link to a totally cute naked guy.

I think the first part of their blog post on the incident is funnier than the email, complete with an image of fat-fingered Homer.

Heh, I'm glad I set the maximum automatic payment on my credit card to $20, because otherwise I would've had $350 deducted this morning. How much did the bug hit you up for?

They were going to bill me for $238.80, but they had it reversed before I could see anything. I think the whole thing is hilarious.

I got the same thing. I responded with:

"Oh, DreamHost Billing Team, were you not so adorable and lovable, your drunken multi-billing antics would send me in to a rage that would most likely culminate in me burning something down. Alas, I can't stay made at you, you big silly. You and your fat fingers are forgiven."

huh, i saw their blog post and thought the exact opposite -- this is the *one* time that joking around and shit is just lame. i mean, people are getting hundreds of dollars debited from their checking accounts by mistake, and he's hunting down homer simpson pics? I tend to try to have a sense of humor about stuff, but if you fuck up with other people's money, methinks it's time to be humble and apologetic.

i must just be getting old and cranky. but i can't help but think if any of the sites that my friends run did the same thing, nobody would put up with the jokes. :)

Their blog post should perhaps have been a little more serious, but DreamHost seems to defend their right to be goofy. I once complained about their tone in a Newsletter update and they pretty much defended it.

However, the email I received was pretty humble and apologetic. I didn't see the blog post until later, and by then I already knew I didn't have to worry about any charges. Perhaps if I had read the blog first I might have been more irritated by it.

We're all getting older and crankier, and we could probably do with taking ourselves, and the world around us, a little less seriously.
